EMDR – the Psychological Treatment Making Headlines
Could EMDR Be the Breakthrough You’ve Been Looking For?
In recent years, Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) has gained significant attention for its effectiveness in treating trauma and other mental health conditions. An article on MSN highlights it as a life-changing therapy that is helping people move forward. You can read the full article here.
So, what is EMDR—and why is it making headlines?
What is EMDR?
EMDR is an evidence-based therapy developed to help people recover from trauma, including PTSD. Unlike traditional therapies that focus on talking through distressing events, EMDR works by helping the brain reprocess traumatic memories so they’re no longer psychologically disruptive.
A unique feature is the use of bilateral stimulation – usually through guided eye movements, tapping, or sounds – while the person recalls difficult memories. This aims to help the brain unstick from trauma and reprocess memories in a healthier, more adaptive way.
Why Is It Gaining Popularity?
The MSN article shares compelling personal stories from people who credit EMDR with dramatically improving their mental health – even when other treatments fell short. Many describe the relief they feel after EMDR as “life-changing.” While it’s most well-known for treating trauma, it’s is also being used to address anxiety, depression, phobias, and grief.
Backed by organisations like the World Health Organization and the Australian Psychological Society, it’s increasingly being offered by clinicians trained in trauma-informed care.
Is It Right for You?
While not everyone is a candidate for EMDR, it may be worth exploring if:
-
You’ve experienced trauma or significant stress that still affects you
-
You feel “stuck” despite trying other forms of therapy
-
You’re looking for a structured, time-limited therapy with strong evidence behind it
At Denton Clinical Psychology, some of our clinicians do offer EMDR. If you’re curious about whether this might be a good fit for your needs, please get in touch. We’d be happy to have a conversation with you.
